It is of great significance that Professor Yoro Diallo won the 2024 Chinese Government Friendship Award, becoming the first foreign scholar to receive this award in the history of our university and the first outstanding representative of Mali to receive this award.
Professor Yoro Diallo graduated from the University of Paris I (Sorbonne Seminary) in France, he worked as a researcher at the National Museum of Mali and is fluent in Bambara, French and English. In 2013, he worked in China as First Counselor of the Embassy of Mali in China. In 2017, with the approval of the State Administration of Foreign Experts Affairs, he joined the African Research Institute of Zhejiang Normal University, mainly responsible for postgraduate teaching, scientific research and cultural relics research in African museums. With the continuous expansion of his work, Professor Yoro is not only the director of the African Museum and the China-Africa Exchange Museum, but also the executive director of the African Francophone Research Center of the African Institute of African Studies, Zhejiang Normal University, and has achieved excellent results.
As one of the African scholars who cosigned the letter to President XI JINPING, Yoro said:
I am very excited and will continue to promote people-to-people exchanges between China and Africa and be devoted to the joint modernization of China and Africa.”
In fact, Professor Yoro has always been an active practitioner of China-Africa cooperation and a bearer of friendship between the two parties.
During his work in China, Professor Yoro went deep into China’s rural areas, enterprises, schools, governments, and gained an in-depth understanding of the internal logic and values behind China’s development path and successful model, as well as a deep understanding of the CPC’s ruling system and capacity building, as well as the CPC’s ideal pursuit of putting the people first while keeping the world in mind.
All of these not only brought me a huge shock, but also let me have a strong will and mission to share with the world. Therefore, over the past years, I have published more than 100 articles in English, French, Swahili, Arabic and other languages, introducing China’s development story to Africa and the world. Once you understand China, you will love China.”
Yoro said in his acceptance speech.
Professor Yoro transformed his love for China into practical actions to promote China-Africa cooperation. In March this year, the 13th session of the China-Africa Think Tanks Forum was held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Scholars from 50 countries in China and Africa jointly issued two important outcomes, namely, the “China-Africa Think Tanks Consensus on Deepening Global Development Cooperation” (also known as the “China-Africa Dar es Salaam Consensus”) and the “China-Africa Think Tanks Cooperation Network Initiative”, which triggered heated discussions in the international community. In September, the two outcomes were written into the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation – Beijing Action Plan (2025-2027), which elevated the non-governmental consensus of Chinese and African scholars to the official action of China-Africa cooperation. Previously, as a senior scholar, Professor Yoro participated in the drafting and translation of the two outcomes, contributing wisdom to China-Africa cooperation.

In 2019, under the proposal of Professor Yoro, the African Francophone Research Center of the Institute of African Studies of Zhejiang Normal University was established, and Professor Yoro has served as the executive director of the center. With the efforts of Professor Joro, the Center provides knowledge support for knowledge innovation and interdisciplinary cooperation between China and Francophone countries in Africa, and has gradually become a non-governmental window for the governments, relevant functional departments and scholars of Francophone countries in Africa to observe and learn from China’s development model and promote mutual learning and win-win results

In addition, Professor Yoro is also actively committed to promoting communication and exchanges between Chinese and African youth and continuing the tradition of China-Africa friendship.
In this regard, Professor Wang Heng, secretary of the Party Committee of the African Research Institute of Zhejiang Normal University, said that Professor Yoro’s love for the young people of Africa and China is deep and wide, he is both a loving parent and a strict mentor, sometimes warm like spring rain, sometimes strict in his requirements. Meanwhile commited to help African young people grow up, and train new generations of builders of China-Africa cooperation.  withstood wind and rain with boundless vitality and sustained progress.
